The army has been drafted in to transform a Drumchapel gym into a mass coronavirus vaccination centre.

The facility, located at Glasgow Life's Donald Dewar building, will be one of four in the city to join the NHS Louisa Jordan in rolling out the vaccine.

The Drumchapel centre should be ready to open by early February, with the capacity to vaccinate around 1000 people per day.

Soldiers of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards were pictured at the leisure facility as they worked alongside staff from City Building to transform the sports hall into a coronavirus vaccination hub.

Glasgow City Council leader, Susan Aitken, attended the facility this morning.

She said: “It is absolutely vital that we get this vaccine rolled out across the population as soon as possible, starting with the most vulnerable and Glasgow City Council is glad that we have been able to assist.

"This is the biggest vaccination programme ever undertaken in Scotland and the logistical and organisational expertise of the military combined with the availability and accessibility of council-owned venues will accelerate the roll-out of the vaccine by NHS staff.

"Right now, City Building staff are working alongside the army to put in place the necessary infrastructure, so that we can hand over our facilities to the NHS and vaccinations can begin as soon as possible.

"Health officials are aiming to have over half a million people in Scotland vaccinated by the beginning of next month. Glasgow City Council stands ready to assist in whatever way we can.”
