KIND-HEARTED football fans have scored support for thousands of Glasgow's most vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pensioners, the city's homeless, children, and NHS staff fighting the bug on the frontline are among those to benefit from the Celtic FC Foundation's Football for Good Fund.

More than £1 million has been pledged to the charity wing of the Parkhead club since the launch of the fundraiser last year.

Covid: Celtic FC Foundation raises £1m to provide support during pandemic

Chief executive Tony Hamilton told the club's website: "We have raised over a million pounds and that's a big, big credit to the Celtic supporters across the world.

"They have helped us achieve some of the things we have been able to do.

"All the things we normally do were not available for us this year but still it was a remarkable response."

The cash raised has supported 36,000 families and individuals, 10,000 pensioners and 7,000 homeless people, as well as provided hot meals and drinks to frontline NHS staff.

That total also included the annual Christmas Appeal, which raised £250,000 from Celtic supporters throughout the world.

"It is a truly remarkable response and a real credit to the Celtic support," Hamilton added.

"During the initial stages of Football for Good we provided 11,000 hot meals and drinks for NHS staff and now we are working with them closely to create a place in Glasgow Royal Infirmary so they can get away from the chaos [of fighting the virus].

"The NHS is facing more stress and strain than it has ever faced."
