STAFF at an East End school terrorised by cruel vandals have told of their "horror" after it was set on fire last week.

Heartless yobs struck at St Maria Gorreti Primary on Friday causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

It was the third time the Skerryvore Road hub had been targeted by thugs since the start of January with vandals previously breaking into the building and going on a wrecking spree.

Headteacher Yvonne Henry said: “We are situated in the centre of the community in Cranhill and we provide services valuable to the area in this difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The damage costs are horrendous and to quite honest it is the last thing we were needing or expected.

"Working with other agencies we will improve our security measures and I would encourage anyone with information on these break-ins to contact the police."

As we previously reported, paint was thrown onto walls and displays made by pupils were trashed by yobs earlier this month.

Last week, emergency crews rushed to the school late on Friday night after flames engulfed parts of the building.

Speaking after Friday's fire, councillor Chris Cunningham, city convener for education, skills and early years, said: “This is the second time in a matter of weeks that mindless vandals have targeted the school.

“It’s a disgrace and we would urge anyone with information to contact the police – these despicable individuals have to be stopped.

“I know that we are living in challenging times but targeting our schools – especially when the majority of our pupils are not able to attend school in person – is sad and pathetic.

“We all have to hope that the vandals will be caught.”

Chief inspector Michael Duddy, of London Road police office, said: “This series of break-ins to the school has caused a lot of damage to a valuable community asset.

"The people who broke into the school last week have caused a terrible amount of damage by setting fires within the building.

"Those responsible are likely to reside locally and we are continuing our enquiries to trace those responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
