The first dose of the coronavirus vaccination is to be completed among over 80s in Scotland by the end of next week.

Speaking at the daily coronavirus media briefing, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that vaccinating Scottish care home residents was also "virtually complete".

She made "no apology" for prioritising care homes first in the jab roll-out.

She said: "Around 60% of people over 80 have now had the first dose of vaccine. Over 70s will start to be vaccinated next week, and all of them along with those who are clinically vulnerable will have had the first dose by the middle of February.

"I will make no apology for the fact that we did prioritize care homes first with the vaccine. Not just because that is what the JCVI recommended, but because we know that else are some of the most vulnerable.

"We have now virtually completed vaccinations of care homes - around 95% - there will be efforts to get that percentage up. We have effectively completed the vaccinations of older residents in care homes.

"The vast majority of over 80s will be vaccinated by the first dose by the start of next week."
