DEVASTATED punters left floral tributes outside a city bar after the tragic death of its legendary doorman "Big John".

John Frasers' death was announced last night and heartbroken barflies with fond memories of the Nice and Sleazy bouncer flooded social media with tributes.

He was remembered as the firm but fair long-serving guardian of the Sauchiehall Street nightclub's doors who had a great sense of humour and immense patience for the venue's rowdy revellers.

Ariki Porteous, the owner of the city centre alternative spot, summed John up as "the face of Nice and Sleazy".

"John started with us right at the beginning, so he was there for around 30 years," she said.

"He liked the music but his real passion was photography. We're getting copies of his pictures, he took loads of Sauchiehall Street over the years.

"He was a real people person. His brother Chas is another well known character, he's a trumpet player, so John was always around it but for him it was more about the people and the chat."

He took after his father's larger-than-life personality, who worked as a bus driver for the Glasgow corporation after moving to Britain from Gambia, said Ariki.

"In the last year people were always asking after him when he was off sick," she continued.

"He wasn't on social media himself, so there wasn't a way for him to really know that. But there were so many people asking how he was."

John went off sick last year with heart problems and Ariki had hoped that if he did have to leave permanently, the pub could throw him a party.

Ariki - who was introduced to John through her boyfriend in 1989, when she was 19 - was devastated that was not possible because of the pandemic but hopes to have an event in his memory when restrictions are eased.

Scottish indie rockers The Twilight Sad said: "So sorry to hear that we lost John this weekend. My wife was one of the managers of Nice and Sleazy and John was the doorman for as long as I can remember.

"Many a night he had to put up with my drunken after hours patter. A truly lovely man who we’ll miss. Rest in Peace John."

Franz Ferdinand frontman Alexis Kapranos said John was "loved by many in Glasgow".

He added: "That time he had to kick me out for misbehaviour, he was very jovial, compassionate, but firm."

Stuart Braithwaite, the guitarist in Glasgow band Mogwai called him the "greatest of all time".

Aidan Moffat, of Arab Strap fame, joked that John "only" barred him once from the venue. He added: "Raising a glass tonight to Big John from Sleazy's, the best doorman a pub could hope for, a solid gold gent with the mightiest laugh."
