EMMA Stone will star in a film adaptation of Alasdair Gray's novel Poor Things.

The Riddrie-born author's 1992 book about an "oversexed, volatile female Frankenstein", as the film's description puts it, is expected to start filming this autumn.

It will be directed by the man behind The Favourite and The Lobster, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone has been tipped as the film's star.

According to a description posted to social media by film podcast host Diego Andaluz, the picture will follow the story of "the bizarre life of oversexed, volatile Bella Baxter, an emancipated woman and a female Frankenstein," living in Victorian Glasgow.

A picture accompanying the post appears to show the Oscar-winning actress sporting a period costume on-set with the celebrated director.

The novel is set primarily at a mansion in the city's Park Circus and is celebrated as one of the Glasgow author's greatest works.
