Almost 2000 new coronavirus cases have been identified in Glasgow in the past seven days.

From last Monday, a total of 1909 new cases have been confirmed within the health board area.

It comes as 928 new cases in Scotland were confirmed in the past 24 hours with 283 of these recorded in Glasgow.

Sadly, five Covid-related deaths were also recorded in Scotland overnight.

Speaking at the Scottish Government coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said the daily test positivity rate is 6.6%, down from 6.9% on Sunday when 584 new cases were recorded.

There are 1672 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, down 38 in 24 hours.

Of these, 108 were in intensive care - which is no change on the previous day.

Nicola Sturgeon said 866,823 people have been given a first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, up 27,557 from Sunday.

She added that over the coming week, Scotland is expected to hit the milestone of one million coronavirus vaccines administered.

But she warned that the first dose of a vaccine does not begin to have a protective effect until around two or three weeks after it is received.

However, Ms Sturgeon said we “don’t yet know that the vaccine will stop you from getting Covid or transmitting it to someone else, although there is growing evidence that vaccination does have some impact on transmission”.

The First Minister told the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus briefing that everyone including those who get the first dose of the vaccine need to be careful and stick to lockdown restrictions.
