A MAN who mowed down a teenager in a senseless attack has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Dean Wright was convicted of the murder of Liam Hendry last month at the High Court in Glasgow after a week-long trial.

Today Judge Lord Arthurson handed down the sentence to Wright, who was high on cocaine and had been drinking booze when he ploughed into the 18-year-old.

The judge said the effect of Liam's loss on his family would be "profound and enduring", giving them a "life sentence of grief".

He told Wright: "You have visited on Mr Hendry's family a life sentence of grief.

"You used your van as a weapon in a brutal, unprovoked, wholly murderous attack.

"This was a murderous attack on your victim who was unknown to you.”

Liam was left with "catastrophic" head injuries when Wright, 32, mowed him down in Barrowfield in the early hours of September 29, 2019.

Defence QC Tony Graham said: "First of all, Mr Wright recognises that he has trespassed into the realms where only the almighty may go.

"He recognises that, from the point of view of being a father himself, no forgiveness can ever be achieved from those who have to suffer daily the consequences of a loss.

"At 32, he has hopefully a long period of time ahead; for those grieving time is unlikely to heal any wounds they have endured.

“Mr Wright asks me to apologise in the expectation it will offer little comfort to Mr Hendry's family and friends.”

Celtic fan Liam had been with friends at a house party when a clash between two rival groups broke out in the street.

He joined friends outside to watch the rammy when Wright ploughed a van into him, sending him flying into the air before landing on the ground.

Friends and neighbours tried to help the teenager but his injuries were too severe.

The court heard Wright then turned the van and drove at four people surrounding Liam, Jacqueline Foy, Daniel Ewing, Laura Ewing and Brandon McAuley.
Wright was convicted of the attempted murder of the four.

His co-accused Robert Farrell, 33, who was a passenger in the van, walked free after he was cleared of murder and attempted murder.

The court heard Wright has previous convictions for offensive weapons, road traffic matters and dishonesty.

Lord Arthurson also gave Wright a lifetime ban from driving.
