A BINMAN has been hurt after falling while carrying out his duties in poor weather conditions.

Neighbours rushed to the 44-year-old man’s side after the accident in Hillcrest in Carmunnock on Monday.

It’s understood the agency worker, who was working for Glasgow City Council at the time of the incident, received minor treatment for his injury.

A man who lives on the street said: “I spotted a couple of neighbours out on the street, so I went over.

“It looked like he’d had a cut.”

It comes as GMB union hit out at the council’s decision not to suspend refuse collections during the snow.

A number of city depots were forced to scrap pickups during Monday’s snowfall, instead putting staff to work clearing paths to vaccine centres and hospitals.

However, major sites at Polmadie and Shieldhall remained open as usual.

GMB Scotland organiser David Hume said: “We wrote to two operations managers raising our objections.

“We asked for the rationale behind this inconsistent approach and documentation to prove that the necessary safety inspections had been carried out, disappointingly we are yet to receive a response.

“Subsequently, an agency worker at the Polmadie Depot has slipped. This is a disgraceful abdication of responsibility with the workforce paying the price.”

It’s understood the worker suffered a cut to his hand.

A spokesman for the council said: “Any injury suffered during working time is taken very seriously and we will look closely at the circumstances of this incident to ensure proper health and safety procedures have been followed.

“We do have a winter weather protocol in place for the cleansing service which allows local managers to make decisions based on local conditions with frontline staff also providing key information on what work can be safely undertaken.

“Clearly this week’s heavy snow has caused disruption to services, but thanks to great work by our staff we have been able to fulfil our responsibility to remove household waste from many parts of Glasgow south.

“Cleansing staff across the city have been temporarily redeployed on to gritting and snow-clearing duties and that will help to support bin collections in the coming days.

“Anyone who has presented a bin at kerbside in the past couple of days is advised to leave the bin out for collection and it will be emptied as soon as possible.”
