A midnight firework display in Glasgow this morning has left residents across the city puzzled.

As we were just about to nod off, many of us were jolted with bangs and pops from the noise of fireworks in the West End.

It was an unusual array of loud sounds to come from a city currently in the middle of lockdown.

Puzzled Glaswegians wrote of their confusion on all platforms of social media, with one person saying: "Fireworks?! Lots in distance... Glasgow.... Anyone else hear?"

Commenting on the bursts, another added: "Anyone know why there are fireworks in Glasgow this evening? It's past midnight and it's still going on?"

Craig Brown said: "Anyone in Glasgow know why there are fireworks going off down close to the Clyde?"

The answer is sweet and short - locals had been celebrating the Chinese New Year with this year marking the Year of the Ox. Many had enjoyed the dazzling lights from Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Glasgow Harbour.

Although it is illegal for fireworks to be set off between 11pm and 7am, exemptions are in place for the Chinese New Year and Bonfire Night with a curfew of 1am.

Happy Chinese New Year, all!
