Celtic this morning announced that Neil Lennon has resigned as manager of the Parkhead club.

A statement published on their official website read: "Celtic Football Club today announced that Neil Lennon has resigned from his position as football Manager with immediate effect.

"We thank Neil sincerely for all he has done for the club and we wish him every success going forward."

The quadruple treble winners lost 1-0 to bottom-placed Premiership side Ross County in Dingwall on Sunday and are 18 points behind Rangers in the league table.

Lennon received two votes of confidence from the Parkhead board after a disappointing run of results at the end of November and beginning of December.

A statement following a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone at home in the league said the Scottish champions' directors would review his position "in the new year".

Lennon's assistant John Kennedy is set to take charge on an interim basis until the end of the 2020/21 campaign following boardroom talks.

The 49-year-old has come under mounting pressure in recent weeks as Celtic's hopes of completing 10-In-A-Row have ended in disappointment and failure and a growing number of supporters have called for him to be sacked.

Celtic lost 2-1 at home to St Mirren for the first time in nearly 31 years last month - but then went on a five game winning run.

But the loss to County on Sunday nightheralded the end of Lennon's second spell in charge of the club he has spent much of the last 20 years at as a player, coach and manager.

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier last week stressed the Parkhead board will not be rushed into any "hasty" decisions over Lennon's future when the interim financial results were released.

He said: "I must state clearly that all decisions we take will be taken calmly and rationally.

"We will not make hasty decisions that we might regret. There is considerable uncertainty as to how and when the game will get back to normal."

Lennon took over from Brendan Rodgers back in February 2019 when his countryman joined Leicester City and promptly helped the Glasgow outfit to complete their third consecutive treble.

He became the first man ever to do a clean sweep of domestic silverware as a player and a manager in December when his side beat Hearts on penalties to win the delayed Scottish Cup final at Hampden.

However, Celtic have struggled this term; they failed to qualify for the Champions League group stages, bombed in the Europa League, were knocked out of the Betfred Cup by County at home and have struggled in the Premiership.
