Nicola Sturgeon said if she was to give a date for the end of lockdown she would be "making it up".

The First Minister responded to comparisons between the road map out of lockdown she published yesterday and the plan for England by Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister.

Johnson said that restrictions would be lifted fully by June 21.

Sturgeon said in Scotland there would be a return to the levels system and three weeks between careful easing of restrictions.

The First Minister said just now she cannot have confidence beyond a six week period on relaxing measures. She said the impact of the return to school, both this week and on March 15, had to be monitored and measured.

She said: "On a hard and fast specific date. It would make my life easier in the short term.

"And that's the point. If I was to give a hard and fast date, I would be making it up.

"I'm not ruling out specific dates. But when I give you that date I want to be as sure as I can be that it is real and can be delivered."

However she said that she did not think Scotland was much further behind England and expected restrictions would be lifted at a similar pace.

She added: "I can't say the 21st of June with any certainty. I would be making it up. "I can't say I've got advice that is something I can say with certainty.

"If England is able to deliver that I can't see that Scotland would be much further behind."

She said the framework she has published is indicative dates for the next six weeks up to Easter when a return to the geographical levels is planned.

Sturgeon said: "It's harder to know the likely course of the pandemic after that.

"We have to monitor the first few steps out of lockdown. That means looking closely at the first phase of school return and the next phase on the 15th of March."

She added: "The hope is the more we learn the more confidence we have we can go further and faster without a resurgence that would set us back.

"We will move forward."

Sturgeon said that it was hoped that after the country moves to level three on April 29 then we would be able to move to even lower levels over May and June.

She added: "We will move further and faster if we can.

"I'm more confident with every day that we are getting closer to an end date."

The latest statistics showed there were 397 positive cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

There were 1018 people in hospital, down 58 and 93 in intensive care, the same as the day before.
