MAIN door properties in the city’s South Side are to move to a three-weekly green bin collection next month, the Glasgow Times can reveal.

Those who present their bins for a kerbside collection will see the change come into force on from April 5.

The controversial scheme was rolled out to the North West of Glasgow last week, having been launched as a pilot project in the North East last October.

Glasgow City Council insists moving the rollout is aimed at increasing recycling rates, which are currently trailing behind other UK towns.

However, critics have blasted the move as being driven by budget cuts and called for it be halted.

Councillor Soryia Siddique said: “Constituents have been raising ongoing concerns regarding fly tipping, infestation, littered streets and missed bin collections. How will the three-weekly bin collection help this situation?

“The SNP administration must listen to the views of the local communities that are affected by their budget decisions.”

Cllr Kyle Thornton added: “This rollout is being forced by the SNP and Greens on residents across Glasgow without any consultation.

“No matter what they say, this decision was taken to save money rather than increase recycling ... moving the frequency to three-weekly is sheer madness.

“It’s time for this unpopular policy to be scrapped and investment made to improve our cleansing services.”

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction said: “From April 5 all kerbside collections across the city will be three-weekly and will complete the roll out to help motivate more households to encourage better use of all the recycle bins that are available to them.

“The phased introduction of the new collections has given residents time to plan how this will work for their families and early evidence since phase one in November last year is very encouraging. But if a household finds they need an extra recycling bin then we will provide that free of charge.

“Three-weekly kerbside collections for general waste have worked for other local authorities and the new approach actually eases the burden on staff doing the collections.

“This change to kerbside collections for general waste is directly derived from the Household Recycling Charter that councillors of all parties freely agreed that the council should sign up to.

“All councillors also agree the city is facing a climate crisis and that we must aim to be carbon neutral by 2030.

“Three-weekly kerbside collections for general waste is an important step in the right direction as part of a much bigger battle and so it’s a surprise to see some councillors struggle to live up to their commitments on the environment.”
