THE future of a well-loved social club in Glasgow been plunged into uncertainty after a burst pipe "devastated" its premises.

The blow has caused the ceiling to collapse while flooding has "ruined" the carpets, dancefloor, seating, walls and lights of the Maryhill Club 90.

Due to the current coronavirus lockdown, owners are unsure when the damage took place, however, the "heartbreaking" discovery was only made last month.

David Church, who is the administrator of the facility, said: "I was heartbroken when I saw the condition of it, completely shellshocked. My heart just sank.

"Due to lockdown, we don't know how long it has been for but how it never caught fire is beyond belief. We're scared that the club could close because of the significant cost of the damage."

While David has been working hard at the premises daily trying to amend repairs, additional funding will be needed to fix the ceiling and floors to bring the facility "back to life".

David added: "It will probably take thousands to fix it up and get it to the way it was before Covid.

"The owner was trying to save as much money as possible to put it back into the club and get it back to a good standard and then the roof came down, so that’s that really.

"Over the years, it has done everything for the community – from engagement parties to birthday bashes and funerals - you name it. Aside from that, we do clubs for all ages in Maryhill too.

“That is how local people will remember it. I think a lot of people would be devastated to see it go. Maryhill without the Club 90 would be empty. It wouldn’t be the same without it - everyone has a memory here."

Residents in Maryhill have since rallied around the cause, with almost £1500 raised on an online fundraiser in just a matter of days to secure the future of the beloved club.

“Any funds raised will go towards revamping the club and bringing it back to life. We will use it to repair the damage from the leak and start it back up again when we can", said David.

“The owner is determined to keep it open but if the funding doesn’t come through, there is the threat that it will go under.

“In the meantime, we have been at the club trying to preserve what we have left by repairing what we can – it is a complete bomb site.”

Comments on the GoFundMe page read: "Too good to lose, please please help", and "memorable for my family".
