Almost 250 close contacts of those to have tested positive for the Brazilian variant of Covid-19 in Scotland have been traced. 

It was confirmed on Sunday that three positive cases had entered the country from a flight returning to the North East of Scotland from South America. 

All three have been self-isolating since their return.

During the Scottish Government's daily coronavirus media briefing, Health Secretary Jeane Freeman revealed 250 close contacts had been identified by NHS Test and Protect teams. 

Of the 90 people on-board the aircraft that flew from Heathrow to Aberdeen, 56 have been contacted so far. 

Scotland's Chief Medical Officer, Dr Gregor Smith, reassured there is "nothing to suggest" that the Brazillian variant has transmitted into the wider community.

The remaining 34 passengers who have not been approached by NHS Test and Protect teams are being urged to call the NHS National Contact Tracing Centre.

Meanwhile, more than 170 Covid-related deaths have been recorded overnight with an additional 543 positive tests.

Of the new figures, 150 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

It brings the total death toll of Covid-related deaths in Scotland under this measure to 9,580.
