IF you ask an average Joe Bloggs what they think of when you say Italy, they will tell you about Rome, pizza and pasta.

If you ask me, I’ll recite a Tartan Army classic (We’re Gonna’ Deep Fry Yer Pizza), shed a tear, and complain about ‘The Disgrace’.

What is ‘The Disgrace’, you say? Cast your mind back to November 2007. Scotland’s National Team had beaten France home and away, potentially needing just a draw against Italy for a place in the 2008 Euros.

Alan Hutton was fouled – but instead Italy were awarded a free kick, scored and the dream was over. A disgrace.

Watch for yourself...

I’ve had resentment ever since. In fact, I reckon my sorrow at such a young age could be part of the reason why I hated pizza as a child.

But like a fine wine, all things get better with age. And as my taste buds grew, as did my appreciation for pizza (and Italy).

With that in mind, I opted for Bar Vini for my latest review.

Without giving the entire readership my address, this cosy little restaurant is a mere 60 second walk from my flat. Despite my laziest efforts, we opted to collect.

Our order consisted of focaccia to start, margherita pizza for myself, and salumi pizza for my partner Aleena.

We placed the order by phone – they take calls from 3pm to collect later in the evening. I was put through immediately to a helpful staff member who quickly took down my details.

We turned up at 6pm, spotted their beer fridge and quietly added a couple of bottles to our bill. Within minutes our food was out, and the quick stroll back to my flat meant the food was still piping hot on return.

I’ll admit it, going for a margherita was a plain and simple option… but hey, I’m a plain and simple guy.

As pizzas go, it was pretty good. It’s not a Paesano by any stretch, but I don’t think it’s trying to be. If I’m honest, I’m clawing for the end of lockdown to try the sit-down experience at Bar Vini. Perhaps the atmosphere might improve things.

The review wouldn’t be complete without Aleena’s verdict. Simply put: “They have a decent menu at a decent price.

"The food was 6/10 and the pizza was a bit dry/burnt in places, but overall the taste was okay. However there are better places in Glasgow.”

One thing is for sure, it beats reliving ‘The Disgrace’ .
