Nicola Sturgeon has slammed Rangers Football Club for failing to "do more" to prevent mass gatherings of fans at the weekend.

Addressing MSPs in Holyrood, the First Minister said she would be speaking to the Chief Constable of Police Scotland to address what could be done to ensure there is no repeat.

She said: "Let me be clear, in making these comments, I don't care about the colour of the shirts.

"I said some harsh things about Celtic's decisions at the start of this year.

"As far as I am concerned, in this case Rangers Football Club did not do nearly enough to help avoid this situation arising at the weekend.

"The fact is that elite sport is being allowed to continue just now so that fans - deprived of so much else in life right now - can continue to watch and support their teams."

Nicola Sturgeon said the Scottish Government could not "turn a blind eye" to the mass gathering of Rangers fans at the weekend.

Addressing MSPs in Holyrood, the First Minister said: "It would be deeply unfair if a selfish minority spoil that for the majority, and I hope that will not be the case.

"But, given the fragility of the situation we face right now, we cannot simply turn a blind eye to what happened at the weekend and we won't.

"We will report back in due course - and certainly ahead of the Old Firm match scheduled for March 21 - on the various discussions taking place this week."

She said she had received a "three-page" letter from the club but insisted the club did not tell fans to go home and must "take responsibility" for that.

Ms Sturgeon said discussions were ongoing and she would "report back" ahead of next week's Old Firm.

When quizzed by MSPs, she added that she "hoped" they would not have to "spoil" football games for the vast majority of fans who comply with the rules, however, the Scottish Government would need assurances there would not be a repeat of last weekend's chaos.

A total of 28 arrests were made following the club's league win last weekend.
