COUNCIL bosses have hit out at social media claims groups of Rangers fans helped with the clean-up operation following gatherings at George Square on Sunday evening.

Various supporters’ groups took to social media on Monday morning to say they supported the council in tidying up the mess left after thousands of fans gathered to celebrate Rangers’s 55th league title win.

One man was spotted collecting rubbish around 9.30am on Monday.

There was a significant amount of glass in the area, making the task difficult for members of the public.

A senior source at Glasgow City Council has refuted claims that they received any help from supporters, saying: “It was a curious decision to illustrate that with pictures of it not happening too. Broadly speaking, it wasn’t something our teams noticed.”

Images of the square were shared by various fan groups on social media on Monday, claiming that supporters assisted with the clean-up operation. But when they were approached by the Glasgow Times, they did not respond to requests for proof of this.

Glasgow City Council issued a statement yesterday, making it clear that they were not aware of any members of the public assisting the parks team with tidying up the square after Sunday evening’s gathering.

It comes after council staff worked overnight to clear away broken glass, rubbish and plastic carrier bags that appeared to have been left behind by jubilant fans.

A council spokesman said: “Night-shift teams started work in George Square once crowds began to clear late on Sunday evening and work continued throughout
Monday.

“Parks staff did report that a man was attempting to pick up litter in the square at around 9.30am yesterday morning – however, the huge amount of broken glass
present within the debris made it very difficult. We’re not aware of any other members of the public being involved.”

The Glasgow Times reported on the damage caused to memorial benches at the square and Rangers fans’ attempts to rectify this on Monday.

Various fundraisers were launched to cover the damages to seating in George Square.

Support from fans has now reached approximately £15,000 with donations still coming in.

Rangers pub The Louden Tavern was approached for comment over the claims, but did not respond.

Speaking to the Glasgow Times yesterday, however, owner Robert Marshall said: “It’s really quite simple, we have always done things the proper way. I think it’s proper that if Rangers fans have been responsible for the damage then the Rangers fans should pay for it. That’s what we intend to do.”
