TWO men admitted launching an unprovoked attack on an unarmed stranger in a Glasgow street stabbing him eight times.

Matthew Davidson, 19, from Castlemilk and John Wilson, 22, from Drumchapel, attempted to murder William Taube in Edinburgh Road on August 9, 2020.

Mr Taube suffered bleeding round his heart and a collapsed lung in the brutal assault.

At the High Court in Glasgow judge Lord Mulholland told the pair: “You are actually very lucky you are not facing charges of murder. I've seen plenty of cases of murder where the injuries were less than you inflicted.

“You have pled guilty to attempted murder in a public street in Glasgow.

“You conduct that night was an utter disgrace to inflict stab wounds on a man who was unarmed.”

The court heard that thermal installation trainee Davidson was angry because his girlfriend Laura McEwan would not let him attend a birthday party, but asked him to pick her up from there at 3.30am.

He arrived there with his friend Wilson and instead of waiting in the car outside went into the house.

Prosecutor Lynsey McDonald said: “Mr Davidson and Laura McEwan started arguing in the hallway. Mr Taube, who was in the living room, looked in the direction of Mr Davidson.

“Mr Davidson saw Mr Taube looking at him and immediately became angry and told him to get outside.”

The court heard that words were exchanged and Davidson got back in the car accompanied by Ms McEwan.

Then Davidson followed by Wilson, a delivery driver, got out the car and went towards Mr Taube.

Ms McDonald said: “The two accused repeatedly punched and stabbed the complainer., who fell to the ground.”

The accused then got back in the car, along with Miss McEwan, and drove off.

Mr Taube had to undergo emergency surgery at Glasgow Royal Infirmary to drain blood from round his heart, stop the bleeding and repair the other stab wounds.

Ms McDonald said: “Without medical treatment Mr Taube would have died.”

Sentence was deferred on both men until April for background reports.

Defence counsel will give their pleas in mitigation then.
