Celtic and Rangers both confirmed today that they had participated in a meeting with the Scottish government, police chiefs and Glasgow City Council to ensure this month's derby match goes ahead safely and as planned.

The two clubs detailed the 'multi-agency' meeting for the clash following scenes last weekend of Gers supporters in their thousands descending on Ibrox and George Square to celebrate their first league title victory in 10 years.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had warned that the big game on March 21 could potentially be under threat after protocols were ignored last weekend and she said she would seek assurances that nothing similar would happen at Parkhead. Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf echoed the warning as did Professor Jason Leitch.

But both Glasgow giants revealed they had taken steps to address the issue and ensure they would do everything within their power to keep fans safe and away from the ground - with the Hoops erecting fencing around their stadium and providing extra security.

Celtic's statement explained that they would "re-emphasise that message for this fixture as we have done during the season and we are sure that our supporters will work with the Club while the restrictions remain in place." They also added: "Given the damage caused to Club property recently, the Club has already taken steps to enhance security and protection of our property at Celtic Park and the Club is happy to work with those attending the meeting to ensure that any additional protection necessary will be in place for the match in question."

Their rivals also stated that they have agreed to support the 'stay at home message' and that they would "continue an open dialogue in relation to the upcoming Old Firm fixture at Parkhead on Sunday, March 21."

Their statement went on: "We are cognizant of the ongoing fight against Covid-19 and ask that everyone follows Government guidance to stay at home.

"The club will continue to liaise with all agencies as well as a number of supporters. We will continue to work to ensure that the clubs message is reiterated over the coming week and will provide further updates in due course."
