The latest seven day figures for Glasgow show that there was an increase in positive covid-19 cases for the first time since early January.

The figures from Public Health Scotland data show that in the seven days up to last Friday (March 12) there were 842 positive cases recorded in Glasgow. It is an increase of 128 from the 714 that were recorded for the previous week, up to March 5.

There was an increase in Scotland overall with positive cases rising by 49 over the seven days from 3439 to 3988 in the latest available seven days.

The Glasgow rate of cases per 100,000 of population, a key indicator for the government when deciding on lockdown restrictions increased from 112 per 100,000 to 133 per 100,000.

The rate of cases will be a factor in considering which of the levels Glasgow is put into when the system is re-introduced at the end of next month.

Glasgow had a higher rate than Scotland overall, which was at 73 per 100,000 and only Stirling had a higher rate of Scotland’s 32 council areas at 134 per 100,000.

Another five areas, North Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and West Lothian had a rate higher than 100 per 100,000.

In Glasgow there were two areas that were above 400 per 100,000, the highest category shown as the darkest shade of purple on the map.

They were Drumry East, in the west of the city, with 16 new cases and a rate of 482 per 100,000, and Barlanark, in the east, with 20 new cases, a rate of 406 per 100,000.

There were another 27 areas with a rate of between 200 and 399 per 100,000 population, shown as the lighter purple on the map.

At the higher end, with a rate above 350 per 100,000, were Balornock, with 13 cases and Old Shettleston and Parkhead North with 17. 

At the lower end, with a rate of below 210 were Crookston South, and Hillington both with 7 new cases.

There were 24 areas with between zero and 2 cases and where the virus is considered suppressed during that time.

They included Carmunnock North which has had between 0 and two cases for the last five weeks and Dowanhill which had the lowest level for six out of the last seven weeks.
