COUNCIL bosses have slammed St Patrick's Day revellers who flouted lockdown restrictions to gather in Kelvingrove Park.

Crowds of youngsters were cleared by police this afternoon after meeting in the West End beauty spot.

Eyewitnesses told the Glasgow Times officers had to ask people to pour out booze and leave the park.

Kelvingrove Park: St Patrick's Day revellers moved on by police as large crowds gather in Glasgow

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “It is essential at this time that we all follow Scottish Government guidance on social distancing to allow us to tackle the current pandemic.

"Sticking to these guidelines will limit the spread of Covid-19 and enable restrictions to be lifted as quickly as we all would like.

"Gathering in groups such as seen today in Kelvingrove Park risks raising the spread of the virus – a situation no-one want to see.”

One eyewitness said: "Cops telling people to dispose of alcohol. People clearing up after themselves.

Glasgow Times:

"Many moving from the hill. No trouble but park is very busy.

"Lots of people in Ireland rugby and Republic of Ireland football tops and wearing green.

"All seem well behaved."

Current guidelines allow groups of up to four adults from two different households to meet outdoors. The stay at home restriction is to be lifted on April 2.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Around 4.30pm on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, police received a report of a large crowd gathering within Kelvingrove Park.

“Officers are in attendance and are engaging with the members of the public.

"Those involved are heeding the police’s advice and are dispersing.

“There have been no arrests and no-one has been issued with a fixed penalty notice.

"Officers will continue to patrol the area."
