Litter louts have plagued Kelvingrove Park with empty bottles, pizza boxes and rubbish after a day of revelling in the sun.

Hundreds flocked to the West End beauty spot on Thursday for the second day in a row as Glasgow experienced its first taste of the summer heat.

Eyewitnesses have told the Glasgow Times police asked people to move on from the Park in the evening.

An eyewitness said: "Police were checking for people drinking alcohol and asking them to dispose of it.

"It was mainly young people out but there didn’t appear to be any trouble. It was just as busy as it would be without a pandemic on."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "Kelvingrove Park’s permanent bins provide containment for 40,000 litres of rubbish and there should be no reason for litter not to be disposed of properly within the park.

"Individual bins can fill-up quickly during times of high demand, particularly if individuals take no trouble to compress larger items such as pizza boxes and other forms of packaging.

"However, the onus is always on the individual to dispose of their rubbish in the correct way at all times.

"If a public bin is full then another bin should be found and if that bin is also full, then the waste should be taken home to be disposed of properly.

"All of the bins within the park, including those featured in these photographs, are being serviced over the course of Friday morning.

"Additional, temporary bins have been sited at places of high footfall and these will also be emptied frequently.

"Clearly some of the recent visitors to the park need to be reminded that alcohol is not welcome in Kelvingrove and public drinking is an offence that can be met with a fine."
