A POIGNANT memory for Scottish football fans - this week in 1963, Ian St John was named in the national team for its clash with England at Wembley.
The player, who would of course go on to become a much-loved TV personality, died earlier this month after being diagnosed with cancer.
Elsewhere, worried Celtic fans could rest easy as all six of the injured stars who “sat out last night’s 6-0 drubbing by Kilmarnock,” said the Evening Times, “should be fit for Saturday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final tie against St Mirren at Paisley.”
And praise was being heaped upon Rangers following their 5-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.
“If Rangers play and shoot as they did last night…they will not lose another point until the end of the extended season,” said our report.
Jim Baxter, named alongside St John in the Scottish team, impressed our reporter.
“He turned in a display which was positively brilliant…the watching selectors must have been delighted,” said the sportswriter.
“If he can swerve and twist his way past the men of England at Wembley as he did last night, he could be a match-winner for Scotland.”

In the pigeon racing world, we reported that “the St Enoch pigeon special to Annan and Eastriggs and most points in between will again operate this season, leaving St Enoch station at a quarter to nine each day….”
And the racing pages were full of excitement about Saturday’s forthcoming Grand National...
