THE New Anand is barely a couple of minutes’ walk from my home yet to my shame I hadn’t eaten a meal from it until last weekend. Talk about missing something good on your own doorstep.

A neighbour who had been a regular of the sit-in restaurant on Nithsdale Road in Strathbungo before the pandemic – and who now uses its takeaway service – suggested it to me.

I thought we should give it a go for a Saturday night treat.

Four main courses and two fried rice and a garlic naan were more than plenty for the five of us – all with large appetites.

For the spicy pallets I ordered lamb tikka (which came with a smooth curry sauce) and the south Indian garlic chilli with lamb (it was ranked three chillis hot, compared to four for vindaloo and five for phall, so hot but not wildly so).

The dishes were quickly devoured.

I liked the sound of the chicken balti. It had come especially recommended and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The chicken pieces came wrapped it a sauce containing tomatoes, chick peas, tandoori spices and yoghurt – very tasty.

For, let’s say, the more cautious members of the family, a simply chicken breast curry was the perfect dish.

The meat was tender and fresh and the sauce creamy and mild.

Having finally eaten a meal from the New Anand, we’ll certainly be doing so again.
