DEMOLITION work finally began on the Talisman pub yesterday.
Wreckers were pictured yesterday tearing down the eyesore bar in Balgrayhill Road, which has lain derelict since it went out of business more than 25 years ago.
It was consumed by a blaze and became a hotspot for vandals, firebugs and louts.
Pressure was mounting on the site’s owner Mohammed Ameen Mirza last year to tear down the building, which many saw as indicative of Springburn’s decline.
He was eventually forced to demolish the pub after the council threatened him with a compulsory purchase order.
Workers spent this week taking out the asbestos from the building before its demolition.
It is not yet known what the site will be used for, though SNP candidate for Maryhill and Springburn Bob Doris called earlier this year for Mr Mirza to meet with the community to discuss its ambitions for the area’s future. The Nisa director did not respond to Mr Doris’ request for a meeting.
Before it became a blight, the pub held many happy memories for Springburn locals and was known as a popular site for wedding receptions and parties.
