A FOOTBALL coach caught drink driving confessed in court he had been at a lockdown party the night before.

Alan Milne was pulled over by cops on patrol in his grey Audi A3 as it was drifting in the third lane of the M8 near Junction 24 headed to Paisley.

The 30-year-old gave a breath sample and was found to be over the limit.

As police cautioned and charged him he said: "I'm an idiot."

Depute fiscal Lauren Ram Sangray told Glasgow Sheriff Court: "On November 7, 2020, at 12.15pm police witnesses were on mobile patrol in a marked vehicle when their attention was drawn to a grey Audi A3 which was drifting in the third lane of the M8 travelling towards Paisley.

"They found the accused to be the driver and sole occupant.

"On speaking to the accused it was apparent there was a smell of alcohol in the vehicle and from the accused."

Milne's defence brief told the court his client lives with his parents and is currently unemployed but in receipt of Universal Credit.

He has had his driving licence for three years and has six points.

The lawyer said: "He's pleaded guilty and has held his hands up to this matter.

"He is a football coach and is currently on flexible furlough.

"He has no previous convictions and lives with his parents."

The defence agent then told the court that the night before he was caught, Milne had been at a party at a friend's house - despite Glasgow being in a Level 4 lockdown.

He said: "On November 7 he was at a friend's the night before at a party and has been drinking.

"He finished drinking at 1am and thought he would be under the limit by the time he started driving."

Sheriff Patricia Pryce said: "Although you were over the limit I note you weren't largely over the limit."

The sheriff disqualified Milne, from Bishopbriggs, from driving for 12 months.

If he completes a drink drive course then that will be reduced by 20%.

Milne was ordered to pay a £300 fine, reduced from £400 for an early guilty plea, plus a £20 victim surcharge.

His licence was also endorsed.
