A TEENAGER who hurled a firework which exploded in front of a police officer has avoided being locked up.

The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons. carried out the crime while being chased by a constable in Springburn on November 2 2019.

The first offender pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to culpably and recklessly throwing a firework into a bonfire and police assault.

Sheriff Ian Miller tagged the boy for four months keeping him indoors from 7pm until 7am.

The court heard the teen ran from police who believed he was going to set off fireworks.

He was later spotted in Balgrayhill Road with a purple pole over his right shoulder.

Prosecutor Amy Hunter said: “An unlit firework was inserted into the end and he had a lighter in his left hand.

“An officer tied to grab the pole from him and he swung it, narrowly missing the constable’s face.

“He was taken a hold of before he pushed the officer to the chest and ran off.”

The boy was chased before leaping over a fence.

Miss Hunter added: “The officers gave chase and jumped the railing not noticing there was a steep drop at the bottom with a smouldering fire.

“The teenager was 20 metres ahead of the officers when he threw a firework from his pocket which landed in the fire.

“One of the officers was unable to stop and the firework ignited at his feet but he was able to jump over and clear the firework.”

The boy was later stopped by other police and arrested.
