TEMPORARY permission for three stands at Scotstoun Stadium could be extended under new plans.

Glasgow Life has revealed an application is set to be submitted to allow the stands – used by Glasgow Warriors rugby fans – to be in place for five more years.

Public consultation will be held on the proposal, which would keep the capacity at 7350.

Glasgow Warriors have used the stadium for homes game since 2012 and the facility is also home to Victoria Park Athletics Club.

Planning permission for three temporary spectator stands at Glasgow Life-ran stadium was initially granted in 2017 for two years.

An application to extend the temporary permission was submitted in July 2019 but has yet to be determined and will be withdrawn before the new plans are sent to the council.

Concerns have previously been raised by community councils – Jordanhill, Whiteinch and Scotstoun – as well as Victoria Park Athletics Club.

The athletics club told the council the “temporary structures remain at detriment to coaching and athletics”. When they are in place, the club can’t host track and field events.

Due to Covid-19, rugby matches have been played behind closed doors.

A Glasgow Life representative said: “The suspension of the 19/20 season and the lack of crowds in the 2020/21 season has had a significant and damaging impact.

“The full extent of which is not currently clear, but it will have a long-term consequence.”

He said the new application would be for temporary permission from June 2021.

It would take into consideration transport and travel and allow an “optimal long-term solution for hosting Glasgow Warriors in the city” to be identified.

He added: “It is hoped the extension to the permissions and that further temporary planning permission will give both Glasgow Life and Glasgow Warriors time to recover, reset and rebuild for the future.”

Councillor Bill Butler said: “There were many concerns raised by community councils, about the parking and the problems with parking when a full attendance was at Glasgow Warriors.

“Obviously, full attendance is not in prospect immediately, but the concern will be this is another extension to the temporary stands, what are you going to do to meet with the community interests and those that have got concerns?”

The Glasgow Life representative said they held “regular travel plan engagement sessions to understand where we can improve”.

He said they had also engaged with council partners “to ensure we are doing everything we can to improve the situation”.

“It is a further extension”, he added. “I suppose what I would say is the pandemic has obviously fundamentally changed the landscape.

“It is presenting some significant challenges, for not only Glasgow Life, but also for the Warriors. The full extent of that is not clear.”
