THE sudden death of a man near Glasgow's city centre has sparked an urgent police probe.

The 55-year-old was found dead in Granville Street, near the Mitchell Library, in the early hours of this morning.

The street was closed at North Street into Berkeley Street and at Sauchiehall Street into Granville Street. It has since reopened to traffic, the council confirmed.

A police spokesman said: "We received a report of a sudden death on Granville Street, Glasgow, around 4.30am on Wednesday, April 28.

"A 55-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. This is currently being treated as unexplained however enquiries are at an early stage.

"The road is currently closed at North Street into Berkeley Street and at Sauchiehall Street into Granville Street.

"Anyone with information about the incident should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0287 of April 28."
