A MAJOR housing and hotel development along the River Clyde has moved a step closer after plans were submitted to the council.

Developer Peel L&P has requested planning permission in principle for a scheme which would revamp land at Yorkhill Quay.

It wants to build 1100 homes and a 200-bed hotel on the northern banks of the Clyde, between the Riverside Museum and Scottish Events Campus (SEC).

“Set to create a major residential, retail, leisure and tourism destination on the River Clyde, the Glasgow Harbour masterplan will complement, support and revive the surrounding area,” Peel’s plans claim.

“The masterplan, including the proposed development at Yorkhill Quay, involves a substantial investment in infrastructure, the creation of hundreds of waterfront homes, commercial and leisure opportunities.

“This investment into the city will deliver a new waterfront destination on the River Clyde, revitalising a key gap site and making Glasgow a city on the river, not by the river.”

Public consultation was held online in November last year.

Images, which are not final at this stage, show how the flats could look, but full details would require approval at a later date.

The proposals include 500 private rented sector homes, 400 co-living homes and 200 flats for sale.

There would also be the hotel, a leisure development, some shops and a river walkway for pedestrians and cyclists.

A series of ‘river rooms’ have been proposed – areas of public realm along the river walkway for people to meet.

“Yorkhill Quay is currently derelict and inaccessible to the public causing dislocation, with the Riverside Museum and Clydeside Distillery being isolated visitor destinations at either end of the site,” the application states.

“The enhancement of pedestrian connectively along the riverfront in this location is vital to unlocking the site’s potential, linking these major city attractions to help facilitate a joined-up watefront district.”

In January last year, Peel secured approval for a new Clydeside retail outlet – the Glasgow Harbour Lifestyle Outlet.
