PICTURES have revealed the devastating damage caused following a suspected gas explosion earlier today. 

A second-floor tenement flat in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire has been gutted due to the suspected blast that took place around 11.25 this morning. 

Photographs show significant damage to the roof and surrounding properties.

An external wall from the affected property fell onto the tenement beside it.

Residents living in the neighbouring flats have been evacuated by emergency services as a precaution.

Locals reported seeing a window being blasted 50ft onto a nearby footpath earlier today.

It is understood emergency services are still at the scene and there are traffic delays expected in the area. 

It is still unclear what caused the blast. 

A 52-year-old man was taken to Glasgow's Royal Infirmary for treatment following the incident.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident in Main Street, East Kilbride.

“Around 11.25 am on Monday, 3 May 2021, police received a report of a suspected gas explosion in Main Street, East Kilbride.

"One man, aged 52 was injured and has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.  Several people have been evacuated as a precaution from the surrounding buildings.  Emergency services remain on the scene."
