A FORMER independent school in Pollokshields could be partly demolished and converted into homes under new plans.

Glasgow City Council has received a request to redevelop the school on St Andrews Drive, which was closed in 2019.

Wellwood Leslie Architects has applied to “convert the existing school buildings into a residential development of large villas and duplex apartments”. There would be nine homes.

Modern buildings on the site, built in the 1960s, would be demolished, with the land used for gardens.

The ownership of the former school is split between a north plot and a south plot and the application only relates to the southern plot.

“It is proposed to retain and restore the original domestic buildings and demolish the majority of the later additions to return the building group to its original residential uses, creating substantial villas and duplex apartments,” the plans state.

The school, in the centre of the West Pollokshields Conservation Area, is made up of three originally separate villas on St Andrews Drive and one semi-detached villa on Hamilton Avenue.

First established in 1894, the school relocated to the site in 1937 and the villas were joined over time to form new classrooms and dining and gym halls.

“These 20th century additions, which include significant extensions to the rear of the site, have bene largely unsympathetic to the scale and materiality of the original villas and to the conservation area,” the plans state.

“The exception to this is a stonebuilt ‘replica’ classroom extension on Hamilton Avenue built in the 1980s.

“The proposals represent an opportunity to reinstate the original residential function of the site, address the urban design ‘mistakes’ of the past and create a housing development that is more appropriate to the character of the conservation area.”

Demolitions will make way for private gardens for the villas and apartments.

There would be 17 car parking spaces, with electric vehicle charging available to all.
