AN investigation has been launched to trace a dog walker who “fled” after their pet attacked a swan in the East End.

The bird was injured early on Sunday morning after the animal – said to be a Staffordshire by eyewitnesses – pounced.

Friends of Alexandra Park said the swan had received injuries to its chest and leg.

Sadly, it had to be put to sleep yesterday.

William Mclachlan, the group’s chair, said: “It’s sad, really sad.

“We have to bear in mind the wildlife live in the park, we go into the park as guests.

“Dogs are guests as well and you have to control it.”

Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue was summoned to remove the male swan, known as a cob, from the pond and take it for veterinary treatment.

The injured animal was said to be in shock prompting it to be fearful of the team sent to help.

The incident is the second to occur this week after a swan was killed in Victoria Park by another dog.

Allison Greig, senior countryside ranger for Glasgow, said: “This was a horrible and shocking incident, but sadly it’s becoming all too common.

“Dog owners are expected to keep their pets under close control at all times when they’re in our parks.

“Sadly there have been numerous incidents in our parks recently where dogs have been allowed to run out of control and cause harm to the city’s wildlife.”

She added: “What’s happened in Alexandra Park is a wildlife crime and the person responsible for the dog could be facing very serious consequences.

“It’s not acceptable for dogs to be out of control in open spaces, upsetting people and putting wildlife at risk.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Enquiries are ongoing into a report of a swan which was attacked by a dog at Alexandra Park in Dennistoun.

“The incident happened between 9.45am and 9.50am on Sunday, May 9. Police enquiries are ongoing.”
