PUBLIC views are being sought on plans to turn a former hospice on the south banks of the River Clyde into 155 flats.

Online consultation has been launched on the proposal for a B-listed building on the corner of Carlton Place and South Portland Street, most recently used as the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

The plan – developed by Thirdline Studio – would see the listed property at 67-73 Carlton Place and a four-storey new-build offer up to 155 homes.

Existing buildings to the rear could be demolished under the proposed scheme.

It has been described as ‘co-living accommodation’ – “managed rental blocks of studio apartments, which offer social living space with shared amenity facilities for residents”.

A rooftop terrace is proposed and there would be a shop unit on the ground floor. Cycle parking would also be provided for residents.

“Located on the banks of the River Clyde, the proposed use will attract an intergenerational range of key workers, temporary workers, recent graduates and young professionals,” the consultation documents state.

A proposal of application notice has already been submitted to Glasgow City Council, on behalf of Thirdline Studio, and plans are expected to be submitted this summer.

Planning permission was granted in July last year for 28 flats, 82 holiday letting rooms and a gym while another application, for alterations and demolition of the rear extension, was recently approved.

The potential applicants believe this shows a principle of development has been established.

The consultation website states the listed building will be “sensitively refurbished” and the ground floor commercial unit will “activate the street frontage and improve the overall vitality and safety of the area”.

It adds: “The proposed development will provide high quality co-living apartments within proximity to the city centre, close to a range of existing public transport hubs and local amenities.”

The consultation, ran by consultancy firm Iceni Projects, will last until May 31, 2021, and comments can be sent to 73carltonplace@iceniprojects.com.

On May 19, members of the design team will be available to answer questions submitted either via the email address or on 0141 465 4996. For more information, go to www.73carltonplace.co.uk.
