PROTESTERS are currently occupying a street in Pollokshields after an attempted immigration raid this morning. 

Groups of people gathered at Kenmure Street this morning following news of the raid by the Home Office, with police also deployed to the South Side street.

Police presence has increased throughout the morning as the number of protesters on Kenmure Street grows larger.

It is believed that there are currently around 300 to 400 protesters on Kenmure Street.

Protesters have blocked an immigration van, which is believed to be holding a family.

Local politicians have blasted the Home Office's attempts to raid the Pollokshields property, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeting: "As constituency MSP, I am deeply concerned by this action by the Home Office, especially today in the heart of a community celebrating Eid.

"My office is making urgent enquiries and stands ready to offer any necessary assistance to those detained."

Prominent city lawyer Aamer Anwar also condemned the move, describing the raid as "cynical, provocative and disgusting".

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, local policing commander, said: "Around 9.55 am this morning, Thursday, May 13, 2021, police were called to an address in Kenmure Street, Pollokshields, following a protest by a large group of people.

"The call was made by UK Immigration Enforcement (UKIE) after a group of protesters gathered at the address where UKIE staff were in attendance. Police Scotland does not assist in the removal of asylum seekers.  Officers are at the scene to police the protest and to ensure public safety."

The Home Office has been contacted for comment.
