GLASWEGIANS were hoping that next week would see the city move with the rest of the country into Level Two covid restrictions.

However, due to an increase in cases in areas such as the South Side and Easterhouse and uncertainty over the "so-called Indian variant", Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that Glasgow will be remaining at Level Three restrictions.

Monday should have seen Glaswegians allowed to drink alcohol inside venues such as pubs or visit family or friends indoors.

The likes of cinemas, snooker halls, and stadiums will also not open on Monday as originally planned, with overnight stays to remain banned.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament today, Ms Sturgeon said: "I know how disappointing this will be but pressing pause for a few days will avoid a situation where we have to impose more restrictive measures in the coming weeks."

The change to the plan has not been welcomed by the city.

One person said: "Scunnered!

"I was supposed to see my family for the first time since Christmas, what are we supposed to do now?"

Another disgruntled citizen said: "Shocking! I feel so much for local businesses preparing for Monday and how this has been handled."

Residents agreed with the sympathy for hospitality businesses, with one reader adding: "Just awful for all the retailers and those in the hospitality industry and their staff in Glasgow city centre."

People have also voiced their opinions that there were other options rather than extending Level Three restrictions, such as surge testing and mobile vaccination units.

However, others called for compassion during the restrictions, saying: "I'm disappointed in the people who think they are hard done by.

"So you may have to be in a different band for a couple of weeks.

"People of Scotland have become whining human beings. Do you ever think of the people who have lost their love ones? Stop being selfish!"

Glasgow is expected to remain at Level Three for at least a further week, with restrictions expected to be reviewed later next week.
