IT'S certainly an achievement to make a big noise about.

Volunteer Jane Mallinson has raised nearly £1500 for Big Noise Govanhill - by walking the distance between all four Scottish orchestras.

The journey of 310 miles covers the distance from the South Side to Big Noise Torry in Aberdeen by way of Big Noise Raploch in Stirling and Big Noise Douglas in Dundee.

As well doing something valuable for the children's charity, Jane said she has also boosted her fitness and discovered a new side to her city.

The 72-year-old said: "It took me two-and-a-half months after starting on January 1 and in mid-March I walked the distance from my house to Big Noise Govanhill.

"I was met with a cheer - it was lovely."

Jane said she bumped into familiar faces on her walks, which helped keep her going even on the days it was pouring with rain.

She added: "I've discovered bits of Glasgow I never knew existed, stayed healthy and somebody said to me the other day I look 10 years younger."

Jane first heard about Big Noise when it launched in Raploch and she contacted the charity to ask to be told if it ever set up in Glasgow.

When Big Noise Govanhill opened she jumped at the chance to be involved - and has been there since the start.

Eight years on, Jane is still a dedicated volunteer, helping to walk pupils from Govanhill's four primary schools to the base on Coplaw Street and supporting music tutors throughout the sessions.

She's even learning to play the viola.

Jane said: "Music has always been part of my life but looking back I wish there had been more of it.

"I would have loved to have done an orchestral instrument but there was no opportunity for it.

"Music should be open to all.

"Often it's only children of parents who can afford music instruction who get the chance so I just like the concept of making music available to everyone."

She also takes pride in the success of the young people she supports.

Jane added: "What is particularly nice is two of the viola kids I saw from early primary are now in Junior Conservatoire and I'm so proud of them.

"The first time I saw the United Orchestra play I was so moved I actually cried to see these kids who had been rolling around the floor and talking nonsense sitting up and playing their instruments.

"One of the viola players I remembered from when he was in primary four played a piece of Bach and I remember I was in the kitchen and I was listening with half an ear and I just stopped dead and burst into tears.

"When I retired I wanted to give my time in a fruitful way and this is certainly it."
