Ms Aitken said nearly 35,000 tests had been handed out across Glasgow and from today, seven lateral flow tests will be posted to every household in G41 and the G42, which tell you if you have the virus in 30 minutes.

Efforts are being focused in the South Side of Glasgow because of fears around the rapid spread of the Indian mutant strain.

Ms Aitken urged all city residents to get tested if they come into contact with someone who has the virus. She added: "If you test negative, do another test in a few days."

We told previously how young people between the ages of 18-39, who are least at risk of death or hospitalisation, in selected South Side postcodes are being offered the chance to skip the vaccine queue.

Ms Aitken said: "People between 18 and 39 in the G41, G42, G5, G51 and G52 postcodes will also be contacted in the coming days about vaccination. If you are offered a vaccination, please take it. And if you have previously been offered one and didn’t take it, please reconsider."
