OUTGOING Celtic captain Scott Brown says that he felt compelled to offer his support to Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara after the Finn was racially abused by Slavia Prague’s Ondrej Kudela – insisting that he didn’t think twice about putting club rivalries to one side.

Kudela could be seen cupping his mouth and witnesses heard the Czech call Kamara a “f****** monkey” during the Europa League fixture at Ibrox – with the defender subsequently receiving a 10-match ban for racially abusing the Rangers player.

Celtic hosted their rivals a few days later and before kick-off, Brown approached Kamara to offer his backing to the 25-year-old in the wake of the incident.

But the club captain, who will complete a move to Aberdeen at the end of the month, insists he was simply doing what any player in his position would have done – adding that he firmly believes a Rangers player would have acted similarly, were the roles were reversed.

“It doesn’t matter who you play for – that should never happen in football,” he told Sky Sports.

“You go out there and whoever you play for, you play to win. You should never be racially abused by opposition fans or other players. It’s disgusting, especially in 2021.

“There’s no need but social media is not exactly helping that. I think we have to do a lot more to stop that so that nothing like that can ever get out ever again.

“We have to show our support – that we’re one club, that we’re all together. It doesn’t matter who is on the field. You support your team-mates and it’s nice to be nice as well.

“I wouldn’t want to see that happening to any of my team-mates and I would expect somebody from Rangers to do that to my team-mates if it ever happened.”
