THERE is no set completion date for Glasgow's subway modernisation works that have been ongoing for almost a decade.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) revealed that the programme would not be complete until their new driverless trains were fully tested but could not confirm a definitive date as to when that would be.

SPTbegan a £288million programme back in 2011 which has seen the rolling out of smart ticketing; some improvements to disability access and the refurbishment of all stations on the 6-mile-long metro system.

Stations will now be undergoing lining improvements to tunnels and trains will be replaced with new driverless trains which are currently undergoing a testing process. It is understood the roll out can be expected in 2022.

A spokeswoman for SPT said: “We have now started the intensive and extensive testing stages of the modernisation programme.

"Until that is all successfully completed to that satisfaction of the contractors and SPT, as well as rail regulators and authorities, we won’t have a definitive date for the completion of the programme.”
