MINI athletes held their own golden games at a Greenock nursery.

As part of their studies about the iconic global event, little ones from Glenpark Early Learning Centre enjoyed their own Olympics day.

Almost 160 children took part in outdoor sporting events such as relay races and hurdle jumping.

The youngsters even had a torch lighting ceremony organised by staff.

Depute head Gaynor Wiggins told the Tele: "We decided to hold our own Olympics ceremony instead of a sports day.

"There were lots of preparations before the event - the wee ones made flags, watched videos and learned all about what happens during the ceremony.

"Currently our children are in their own 'zones' due to Covid-19, so they all got to choose what they wanted to do and what events they participated in.

"It was very much child-led, although the staff had a great time too."

The Madeira Street facility split the sessions into events for the two-to-threes and three-to-five age groups.

Youngsters received medals and certificates for taking part.

Gaynor added: "We had brilliant weather and it really was a fabulous day all round.

"It was so nice to see everyone outside enjoying themselves."
