GLASGOW’S inspiring health staff have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for their hard work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr Kerri Neylon, a GP in Cardonald, and John Stuart, chief nurse of the north sector of the city’s health board, were among those to be awarded gongs last night.
Dr Neylon, who is also clinical director of Glasgow’s Health and Social Care Partnership (North West), was given an OBE for services to the NHS during Covid-19, while Mr Stuart received an MBE for services to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Mr Stuart, who began his career at the Royal Infirmary, said: “I am very grateful and proud to receive this recognition following a personally rewarding 39 year career in nursing.
“Nursing is in my blood. Like many, the Covid-19 pandemic has been the biggest challenge of our careers and the dedication and determination shown by my colleagues on a daily basis was nothing short of incredible.
“We pulled together like never before.”
Dr Neylon said: “It is a real honour to be recognised for this award and completely unexpected. I have been extremely lucky throughout my career to have worked in a number teams locally in my GP Practice and wider Primary Care, alongside HSCPs, with the NHSGGC senior team, and at a national level.
“My own contributions to health and social care wouldn’t have been possible without these experiences, and specifically what I’ve learned from working with such a fantastic group of dedicated, committed, hard-working and supportive colleagues since my career began.

“As such, I’d like to thank them, particularly now, given how hard everyone has worked over the past 18 months.”
Other local health heroes to receive honours included Professor Michael Barrett, the boss of the Lighthouse Lab, which tests for Covid, and University Hospital Monkdlands medic Sheila Anne Buchanan Hill. Prof Barrett was given an OBE and Ms Hill a BEM.
Prof Barrett said: “Helping set up the Lighthouse Lab in Glasgow and working with an extraordinary team was a great privilege.
“The work done there has been pivotal. “
