A LIFELONG Rangers supporter has helped Erskine veterans go green after raising £23,000 for the purchase of a new hybrid vehicle.

Ibrox season ticket holder Jim Clark - who is 74-years-old - completed the challenge of walking a marathon in three days and was given huge support from fellow Bluenoses and members of the community.

His efforts will now have a significant impact on former service personnel based at Erskine Hospital in Bishopton after he handed over the keys to the brand new car in recent days.

Jim was supported by Ibrox legend Davy Wilson during his fundraising drive and the pair were joined at Rangers' Govan home as they crossed the finishing line at the end of their marathon effort last year.

Erskine veteran Bobby Gordon, aged 96, was joined by wife Siobhan at the Bishopton centre as Jim delivered the hybrid motor.

Bobby is a Royal Navy veteran with three years’ service during the Second World War.

In July 2018 he was awarded the Legion of Honour by the President of France, which is the highest French order of merit, both military and civil.

Jim said: “I can’t thank everyone that donated enough.

“The addition of the hybrid car will bring transformative change for Veterans and staff at Erskine, and without those who sponsored this dream wouldn’t have become a reality.

“Charities need more support than ever, and it is great pride that I have been able to raise this money on behalf of the Rangers Supporters Erskine Appeal, as we continue to help lend our support in any way that we can.”

The funds raised from Jim's charity efforts will be split across three areas as he supports the crucial work done by Erskine in providing care for our veterans.

The purchase of the new hybrid car is the first to be realised, with the remainder of the funds going towards the refurbishment of Erskine’s physiotherapy department and the purchase of lifting aids.

In January this year, the Glasgow Times reported on the cash raised by the Rangers Supporters Erskine Appeal as they broke the £1million barrier.

The RSEA - whose President is former Rangers striker and director of football Gordon Smith - have been significant backers of Erskine for several years.

The charity have now benefitted from the tireless efforts of Jim once again and Erskine chief executive Ian Cumming has thanked the Renfrew man for his generosity and dedication to the worthy cause.

He said: “Jim’s fundraising efforts are phenomenal, and we are extremely grateful to him, his family, and the Rangers Supporters Erskine Appeal for their continued support.

“Without the generosity of people like Jim, Erskine would be unable to provide the high-quality care and support services that our Veterans so richly deserve.”
