“NO September picnic for Rangers,” warned our sports reporter this week back in 1966.
The fixtures for the 66/67 season had been revealed, and things were looking tough for both Old Firm clubs.
“They answer the starter’s gun with an Ibrox appointment with Partick Thistle – and when Thistle have the mind they can be very awkward football customers indeed,” continued the report.
“Hard on the heels of that September 10 date, Rangers have to meet and do their best to beat Celtic at Parkhead. Then comes the following tough assignments – Aberdeen at Ibrox and Dundee United at Tannadice.
“Celtic are not to have things much easier. Their first three games are Clyde at Shawfield, then Rangers, and then Dundee at Dens Park.”
Elswehere in the sporting news this week 55 years ago, Scots golfer Marjorie Fowler was gearing up for the Evening Times women’s foursomes for Gullabe for a second time. She was at the top of her game, said our newspaper, having reached the final of the Scottish championshop, losing narrowly to Belle Robertson.

“Despite that defeat, Miss Fowler, who is 29, is considered by Mrs Charlotte Beddows, her mentor and friend, the best woman golfer in Scotland.”
Jim Baxter and the rest of the Scottish men’s football team were gearing up to play Portugal in a friendly at Hampden – they lost 1-0, but it was a good performance, according to our sports pages, and Baxter was one of the stars of the show.
