A MAN caught on CCTV stealing electrical items from John Lewis claimed he couldn't remember what he'd lifted.

Thomas McLean was collared with £600 of goods taken from the Buchanan Galleries store but claimed to have been so drunk he wasn't sure what he had stolen.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard the goods were never recovered.

But the 42-year-old said in court he thought it might have been camera equipment.

The depute fiscal said: "There is CCTV which captured the incident in its entirety.

"He had consumed copious amounts of alcohol but he thinks it was camera equipment."

His defence brief said: "He has no recollection of these events."

The lawyer added that McLean, from Royston, is a carer for his aunt and added: "His personal circumstances are not unusual."

"He does a civic conscience to look after her when others might not."

Sheriff Valerie Mays said: "What I would say to you is you do care for your aunt and so you need to get your substance misuse under control or you'll be no use to her."

McLean was sentenced to a community payback order to last for 12 months.

That came with a conduct requirement to work with addiction services as directed by his social worker.

And he was also tagged for 108 days, which will keep him at home between 8.30pm and 7am every day.
