A MAN who stole a mountain bike was given a chance to prove he can stay out of trouble.

Matthew McCourt was caught on CCTV stealing the bicycle from a back garden on Keal Drive, in Drumchapel, on February 16 last year.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard the bike's owner had seen it the night before but the following day he found the protective cover lying on the ground and the bike gone.

It was not recovered but the court heard it was worth £450.

McCourt, 29, was seen on CCTV taking it.

His defence brief said McCourt was released from prison in October last year having been in custody since July for an unrelated crime.

He is currently employed as a labourer with a scaffolding company and has two dependent children aged 10 and three.

Sheriff Jonathan Guy deferred sentencing for six months to see if McCourt can be of good behaviour.

The sheriff also asked the court to determine if the victim should receive financial compensation for the loss of the bike.
