A MAN who kicked a nurse to the face and chest has been ordered to pay compensation.

Grant Loney, 42, was within a ward at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary on July 1 last year when the assault took place.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing on Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to repeatedly kicking the man on the head and body.

The court heard that Loney was sitting on his bed at around 6.40pm.

Staff members at the hospital asked him questions about a rolled-up bit of paper that was in his hands.

Loney, of Kirkintilloch, replied: “It’s mine, I’m playing with it.”

The 42-year-old then jumped backwards onto his bed and kicked out with his legs, striking the staff nurse on the face and chest.

Loney’s solicitor told the court that her client was high on street Valium at the time of the offence.

She went on to say: “He has no recollection of these events. He really has no idea what happened that day but was admitted to hospital because of his condition.

“He was discharged eight days later, by which time he had stabilised and was well enough to leave. He apologises for what happened and getting into the state he was in.

“He has been getting help with his drug issues.”

The solicitor advised the court that Loney was in a position to pay a fine as he is employed and has a good work ethic.

She also said he was willing to comply with unpaid work.

Sheriff Daniel Kelly told Loney: “I’ve heard what’s said and also heard about your difficulties however this offence is serious.

“You assaulted a medical professional who was trying to assist you. This meets the threshold of prison.”

Loney was ordered to carry out 130 hours of unpaid work and pay £400 compensation to his victim.
