A NEW TV documentary is set to air on the story of the Peru Two who tried to smuggle £1.5 million of cocaine into Spain.

High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule will feature details of the case involving Melissa Reid, from Lenzie, near Glasgow and Michaella McCollum, of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

The pair were sentenced to almost seven years in jail for their part in the smuggling crime. Now Michaella will reveal how they ended up in one of the world's most notorious prisons after being caught red-handed in Lima, Peru.

The former Ibiza club hostess, who is now a mum-of-two, will takes viewers on a five-episode journey from landing on her first holiday in a foreign country, to meeting Melissa and eventually being banged up abroad.

A statement for the series, which airs on July 3, said: "The series has unique access to Michaella, her family, and friends as well as others closely connected to the case and with a range of perspectives on the drugs trade.

“It reveals how a small-town girl from rural Northern Ireland who didn’t even know where Peru was, let alone speak a word of Spanish, embarked on one of the riskiest crimes imaginable - and failed - only to rise up in the ranks of one of the most notorious prisons in the world before being released on probation after serving three years.”

The girls met in Spain in 2013 where they claim they were recruited by an armed drugs gang.

They were snared with 11kgs of cocaine at Jorge Chavez International airport after being sent on the failed smuggling operation by men they had met in Ibiza who allegedly promised them between £4,000 and £5,000.

They received six years and eight months but served less than half of their sentence before a judge deported them in 2016.
