When trying to picture the perfect comfort food dinner, it’s hard to look past Indian cuisine.

Whether you’re hungover, had a long day at work or just feel like treating yourself nothing beats fluffy rice, warm doughy naan and a wonderfully rich curry that burns you’re tongue just the right amount.  Heaven.

We’re spoilt for choice here in Glasgow when it comes to Indian restaurants, so much so that when searching for the best we couldn’t possibly crown a winner.

Instead here’s a list of the top 10 (in no particular order) based on a mix of reviews from our team here at the Glasgow Times and tips from TripAdvisor users.

Keep it handy for the next time those korma cravings hit.

Glasgow Times:

Swadish

Swadish are relative newcomers on the scene but have quickly proven themselves as worthy members of our top ten.

Taking a modern approach to classic Indian dishes and advocating the use of fresh Scottish produce, our reviewer said: “The menu is very different from a traditional Glasgow Indian.

"The truffle kulcha a flatbread was nothing short of a delightful alternative to the traditional naans.”

Glasgow Times:

Obsession of India

With almost 2000 excellent reviews on TripAdvisor this Merchant City restaurant is a real contender for Glasgow’s favourite.

As frequent finalists in the annual Scottish Curry Awards it’s hard to argue with their credentials.

TripAdvisor user Gareth P said “Obsession of India is absolutely phenomenal! Staff are so helpful and friendly. The food is on another level, you’ll never get a better curry in Glasgow! I recommend the Smokey Kharahi. Top marks!”

Glasgow Times:

Ranjit’s Kitchen

A firm favourite with South Side veggies, Ranjit’s Kitchen say their food ‘signifies a journey from the Panjab to Glasgow and is a collection of memories, tastes, ideas and flavours that have developed over many decades.’

A refreshingly simple menu might appear unassuming at first, but make sure to try their light and fluffy ‘Aloo Tikki’ or ‘Daal of the day’ which never disappoints. Who knew lentils could taste so good?

Balbir’s

Balbir’s in the West End is known far and wide for its more refined take on Indian dining, referring to themselves as a ‘restaurant, deli and Indian gastropub.’

Try their Chicken Malai Tikka which is made with a ‘soft creamy marinade spiced with black pepper, green chilli, cardamom and cashew’. Trust us, it’s like a warm, comforting hug for your taste buds.

TripAdvisor Derek M said: “The food was superb. Unconditionally recommended. The best Indian restaurant in Glasgow.”

Glasgow Times:

The Indian on Skirving Street

Another win for the South Side, The Indian on Skirving street’s takeaway service is just appealing as a sit-down meal in its cosy restaurant.

Our reviewer said “I am a wee bit of a seafood snob but I can safely say that the haddock in the Mali curry was outstanding. The meat was marinated in spices and quite clearly fresh as it melted away in every flaky mouthful.

“It was hard to fault The Indian on Skirving Street, they deserve five stars.”

Glasgow Times:

Charcoals

Winning the coveted title of ‘Best Asian Restaurant in Glasgow and the West’ at the Asian Restaurant Awards Scotland is enough in itself to earn Charcoals a solid spot in our top ten.

However, this is just one of the many awards the city centre restaurant has been awarded over the years and the hype is very much deserved.

TripAdvisor reviewer Rebecca D said:  “I recommend the king prawn jhinga masala it was the best curry I have ever had. They are accommodating if you have any requests. The service is always great, lovely staff. Definitely a gem in Glasgow.”

Mother India’s Cafe

It might be cliched to call Mother India’s Cafe a Glasgow institution, but we’ll go ahead and do so anyway.

Small plates are the name of the game with diners encouraged to order multiple dishes. The perfect tapas-style set up those of us who like to try a bit of everything.

TripAdvisor user davidcA8347HS said: ‘This is the best Indian restaurant in Glasgow, if not the whole of Britain. The black dhal in cream is to die for, the southern chicken with ginger and lemon - just tell whoever you are with that they would hate it so you had better eat it yourself!’

Glasgow Times:

Dakhin

Dakhin specialises in South Indian cuisine and has built up quite a reputation since opening in 2004.

You’ll find dishes like Meen Pulli a ‘quintessential dish from the Malabar coast has Scottish monkfish in a spicy, tangy sauce of tamarind and red chillies’ on this extensive menu that caters to all kinds of dietary requirements.

If you want a side with wow factor then make sure to order the Paper Dosa, a beautifully thin crepe made of ground rice and lentils which spans a massive three feet. According to Dakhin themselves ‘You have to see it to believe it!’

                                             Mr Singh’s

Mr Singh’s is another veteran of the Glasgow food circuit whose love for the city inspired them to serve up fusion dishes like 'haggis pakora' on their menu, alongside classic Indian fare.

A whole host of celebrities have dined at Mr Singh’s over the years from Kanye West to Billy Connoly.

If it’s good enough for the Big Yin…

Glasgow Times:

New Anand

Ever so slightly off the beaten track, New Anand on Nithsdale Road is worth taking the time to find.

Our reviewer said: “Their Chicken Balti had come especially recommended and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The chicken pieces came wrapped in a sauce containing tomatoes, chickpeas, tandoori spices and yoghurt – very tasty. ”
